The Awujale and paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, was notably absent from the annual Ojude Oba festival held on Sunday, sparking concerns and curiosity among attendees.
The colourful cultural event, traditionally held three days after the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, is a major occasion for the Ijebu people to pay homage to their monarch and showcase the rich heritage of the land through grand processions, traditional attire, and equestrian displays.
For decades, Oba Adetona, 91, has been a central figure at the festival, presiding over the celebrations and receiving tributes from thousands of guests, dignitaries, and cultural groups. However, in an unusual turn of events, the revered royal father was absent from this year’s festivities. He was instead represented by his wife, Olori Kemi Adetona.
Although no official statement has been issued regarding his absence, a reliable source disclosed to our correspondent that the monarch’s non appearance was due to age-related reasons. “Kabiyesi is simply not getting younger. His absence is due to old age,” the source explained.
A senior government official, who requested anonymity, also confirmed that the monarch’s absence was not due to any health emergency. “There is no cause for alarm. The Awujale is well, but at his age, it is understandable that he takes some rest during such events,” the official noted.

Despite his absence, the festival proceeded in full splendour, with attendees expressing admiration for the cultural significance of the event and extending well wishes to the monarch.
